How to keep ticks out of your yard
Ticks are most active in the spring and at the beginning of fall. Immature ticks emerge in late spring and early summer.
No natural, vegetated area can be considered free of ticks, but here are some goals to give these pests fewer places to hide:
- Take away the places they love – damp, humid areas.
- Add a border – place a mulch border that’s 4 to 6 feet wide around your property’s perimeter
- Clean it up – get rid of brush piles or areas with lots of green debris.

When to treat for lawn grubs
If you see grubs in late summer or early fall, that’s the best time to treat and control them to reduce their damage and decrease the number of beetles that return next year.
Japanese beetle activity during spring and early summer can also be a future indicator. Look for some of these common grub symptoms as it gets closer to fall:
- Discolored or wilting grass that initially looks like drought damage
- Spots of dead or dying grass in early spring (April or May) or early fall (August, September or October)
- Areas of grass that you can easily lift or roll back because the grubs ate the roots
